It took me 43 years to finally figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up. After 20 odd years in the photography industry and dabbling in a bit of graphic design, I happened to “fall” into web design by chance, and only because I needed a new and exiting website to showcase my photographic work. After asking my then web developer boyfriend to “hook a sister up”, he told me I was quite capable of figuring it out myself. And so, I did.
One thing led to another and I found myself in a new passion for work that I had never quite experienced before. Don’t get me wrong, I loved my time as a photographer and that career gave me more experiences than most I am sure, but with new technologies growing faster than we can press the shutter, I found the writing was on the wall and the great photography jobs fewer and far between.
In 2016 a friend of mine asked me to build a website for her. I laughed out loud at the thought of doing it for someone else but she assured me that I could, and so, I gave it a go. Little did I know then that we would work together for more than three years and that I would build many websites for her, including a large, on-going membership site with over 600 members and three online live conferences for people to login, interact, and watch webinars, from all over the world.
It was during this time that I learnt about the importance of growing a community around your brand, the importance of being passionate about what you do and giving your business a personal, human connection. Gone are the industrial days of systems and products and hard sells. Today people are all about passion and trust. Society now demands great service from passionate, trustworthy people, who belive in their product.
I believe that I have a talent for this web design thing. I love it so much that I have to force myself to stop working sometimes. I also believe that with the experience that I have gained over the last twenty something years of running my own business and being involved with others, that if you have a small business, I can help you use the internet to your advantage in whatever industy you may be in.
